Applying Oils and Wax
Before applying oil to your wood cutting board, warm the oil slightly. Apply oil with a soft cloth, in the direction of the grain, allowing the oil to soak in between each of the two or three coats required for an initial seasoning (one coat for re-seasoning).
Wipe mineral oil on the surface of your board and watch it soak in, give it every bit of oil it’ll soak up, until the wood won't take any more. Don’t wipe it off yet, let it drip dry for 4 to 6 hours. After each treatment and waiting the hours of drying, wipe off oil that did not soak into the wood, then let it sit overnight (oxidation or hardening of the oil will take approximately 6 hours).
Don't worry about applying too much oil - more is better. In fact, what we do is immerse the entire cutting board in a tub of oil, let it soak for a couple minutes, remove it to drip dry for 5-6 hours and repeat After all is done wipe off any excess with a soft cloth and let it sit overnight to totally dry and harden.
Re-oil monthly or as often as needed.
To apply wax top coat...
Shave about 1/2 teaspoon beeswax into a microwave safe dish in a cupful of mineral oil; microwave on high for about 45 seconds or until liquid. Apply to the cutting board or butcher block while still warm. Wipe it on with a clean cloth. Excess finish can be easily buffed off with the cloth. Once the finish has had some time to dry it can be buffed to a shine.
Note; All new wood cutting boards supplied by us have this oil-oil/wax treatment applied prior to delivery.
